Facility Laboratory Planner
Job Description:

Abbie Gregg Inc., an AM Company is seeking a Facility Lab Planner for a fast-paced Cleanroom and Laboratory Design Company located in Tempe, Arizona.

Started in 1985, AGI-AM is an engineering and architectural firm specializing in High Tech Industries, University Cleanrooms, and Advanced Labs. The Facility Lab Planner shall be expected to perform the following tasks on a daily basis:

  • Provide technical knowledge in the laboratory planning and programming of various-sized pharmaceutical, microelectronics, nanotechnology, biotech, cleanroom, and imaging academic research, or other emerging technology facilities.
  • Provide technical planning expertise and leadership for laboratory facilities in the areas of programming, design, fit-out planning, equipment planning, MEP systems integration planning, casework specification and construction administration.
  • Meet with clients/users to develop or validate program requirements. Act as a liaison between research and academic clients and facilities contacts.
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with existing and potential clients.
  • Assure document standards are met and archive documents appropriately.
  • Review drawings supplied by vendors, clients, and other discipline group designers that affect the specific project design area to which he or she has been assigned
  • Coordinate with multi-discipline A/E design teams.
  • Be familiar with Lab Budgets and the critical components that affect decision-making in regards to the development and layout of various facility types.
  • Coordinate design criteria with collaborating architectural and engineering groups in accordance with contractual specifications
  • In addition to the defined responsibilities above, the candidate shall also be willing to be trained in several software platforms specific to process flow and requirements based on tool specifications and user requirements. AGI-AM will provide the appropriate training to become proficient with this software.
  • Become familiar working closely with the AGI-AM Process and Engineering Teams, to perform process equipment suitability analyses, selecting the best and most economical tools/equipment based on client requirements and technical data from the tool manufacturers.
  • Assist with the development of tool and HPM room layout concepts to support client process and workflow needs and safe chemical and gas handling.

Qualified candidates shall also be expected to exhibit and provide the following skill sets in concert with his/her technical expertise:

  • Participate in user group meetings (heads of departments, specialists, etc.) to collect program needs for laboratory specifications in technical facilities.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of clients’ program requirements and standards and policies for completion.
  • Assist in the design development, modification and/or review of laboratory planning concepts and solutions.
  • Translate planning concepts into comprehensible terms for clients, designers and project team members.
  • Assist in establishing milestone schedules in coordination with project managers, architects, and project engineers.
  • Communicate planning concepts to project teams, both verbally and through graphic and written reports using standard AGI-AM documents and software.
  • Coordinate with the Architect and Engineers to develop drawings and specifications to communicate planning concepts for project documentation and construction.
  • Anticipate and develop solutions to technical and design problems following established standards.
  • Apply proper QA/QC methods throughout project. The Facility Lab Planner may at times lead this effort.
  • Assist the project manager to develop periodic project presentations and status reports.
  • May assist in the preparation of 2D and 3D presentation/design drawings and models for client/project team review.


  • Demonstrate creativity, passion, and interest in the design, operation and planning of cleanrooms and laboratories within technical facilities.
  • Basic knowledge and/or experience with equipment and processes in the microelectronics industry and/or in the biotech industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of technical and regulatory requirements for laboratory design preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory planning, design, construction documents, construction administration and project construction cost control for lab facilities preferred.
  • Proficiency in AutoDesk Revit or similar BIM platform preferred.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam and MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook,  and Access.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; specifically, the ability to convey laboratory planning needs to designers and other team members.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines and to juggle multiple projects and assignments at once.
  • US Citizenship or permanent residency required.
  • Tool and equipment selection, installation, and/or start-up experience is a plus.
  • Environmental, Health, and Safety interest is a plus.
  • Lab or cleanroom equipment (tool) start up expertise a plus.
Required Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, engineering or science, and/or applicable laboratory design certification preferred.
  • Experience working in laboratory types such as: cleanrooms, vivariums, bio-containment, research, science teaching, pharmaceutical, public health, clinical, process and manufacturing facilities.
